Final Article

91.5 The Impulse is known as WWLR and it is a student run program that is housed on the campus of Lyndon State College at 1001 College Road, Lyndonville Vermont. It has an output of 3,000 watts and reaches all of Caledonia County Vermont and most of Coos County New Hampshire. Students are able to pick a time slot of two hours a show and can create whatever type of show they want. The students have a variety of show types ranging from heavy metal to talk radio and they cover everything in between. Students gain real world experience with the station because 91.5 The Impulse is always updating its music library and giving students the opportunity to grow as radio personalities. The station WWLR does not format its programming other than its two hour show block, and as a result of this the faculty, staff, and student members are permitted free-reign over what music they play or what topics they wish to speak about. The Impulse helps its DJs gain real world experience with its state of the art production room which houses equipment allowing students to manage and produce station promotional material, station identification, and promotional show material. The production room houses high end non-linear audio editing technology allowing students access to professional quality sound effects and industry standard editing for voice recordings and lyrics. While learning about broadcasting and the technical aspect of running a station, DJs who desire to step up a notch can by being involved with management positions. This shows students what its like to run a real radio station in a true business setting. Members gain the radio experience of broadcasting to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, and by streaming shows live on the Internet.

Final Project

For our final project we will be visiting WWLR and speaking with members of the radio station. Some of our goals will be to have a story on their fundraiser where they sold t-shirts, a slide show with Natural sound of someone hosting a show in the radio station, and an accompanying map to illustrate the coverage area for the station and a podcast review of one show.

Video Story

Natural Beauty does not go unappreciated, even by the electronically stimulated generation, when you live here in the northeast kingdom.
You may have to look around for them, but there is plenty of beautiful sights right here near Lyndon State College. Places such Burke Mountain, Lake Willoughby, and historic Darling Hill Road may be some of the most beautiful places not only in the area, but in all of Vermont.
LSC students take the time to enjoy these sights while they have the time up here at school.
“I just love the fresh air,” LSC Senior Kyle Gould said. “It’s nice. We don’t have a lot of people and traffic and stuff that creates a lot of poor air quality like you have in cities, so it’s just nice. ”
62% of students here at LSC are from in state. The other 38% may not have been immersed in the Vermont beauty that the northeast kingdom has to offer.
Burke Mountain, located in East Burke, is the northeast kingdom’s very own ski mountain and resort. People from all over the world travel to see the world-renowned trails and resort that LSC students travel to daily during the winter ski and snowboard season.
“I love being able to go to Burke on a fresh powder day,” said LSC Senior Caleb Noble, who hails from Massachusetts. “There’s nobody at the mountain but you. It’s quiet, it’s beautiful, and there’s nobody around and you just kind of be one with yourself. It’s just a beautiful area.”
Along with Burke Mountain, the world famous Kingdom Trails see millions of visitors every year. The trails cover many miles that LSC students get to ride along during the few warm weeks of the fall semester, and the few warm weeks of the spring

NEK Video Project

Project Idea

For our video project, we're going to be creating a video package of the northeast kingdom. Our sound sources are basically going to be wildlife and natural sound. It will also have narration about what students like about the northeast kingdom.

Future Changes to Lyndon

Lyndon State College has many plans to change and improve the campus from what it already is. One of the upcoming additions to Lyndon is that they are reconstructing the old rugby field to create another NCAA regulation field. The reason behind this is NCAA requirements. Lyndon having recently joined the NCAA only last year has yet to meet their requirement of two varsity athletic fields. A varsity field is a field that is proper dimensions that the NCAA requires. Also for the current rugby field to be considered a varsity field it needs to be properly maintained at a varsity level. The rugby field has been ravaged by intramural football and rugby, both sports tend to tear up a lot of grass and create an uneven playing surface that isn’t suitable for all sports. Another issue is that the rugby field doesn’t drain when it rains heavily it tends to pool water and turn to mud. However the college is going to change that to not only meet NCAA requirements but to improve the campus greatly.

Another future project Lyndon has coming is the Solar project. Lyndon has received a grant from the state to install a 5 kilowatt solar power station. The plan developed by Lyndon’s students in the sustainability program will be providing power to the campus in their efforts to be a more green campus.

However this is not Lyndon’s only effort to go green a more noticeable less expensive way that Lyndon is trying to go green is the installation of LED lights around campus. The new lights use less energy than conventional light bulbs on the campus. As well they give off a brighter, cleaner looking light than the traditional lights that are still spotted around campus. The old lights that give off an orange glow that looks less appealing than the new more energy efficient lights they have installed.
Lyndon has made many great changes to the campus in the last few years and there is plenty more great changes to come in the next few years.

iReport

CNN's iReport is a website that allows you the viewer to post your news and your media on there site. However I like the idea but the practicality of the idea is a different story. Going through the website I found some good pieces but then I also found a lot of stuff that is just not news. People posting halloween pictures and other things that people have created that have no real news worthy value. I think the site could be better if they had better filtering on content that people were allowed to post.

Audio Slide Show Project

My idea for an audio slide show is to take old pictures from campus and show how the campus has changed over the years including recent changes as well as upcoming changes to the campus. I will interview people to get there opinions on the changes that have been made. I will visually show the changes with pictures of before and after with cross fades that presents and lets the viewr see the changes that the have been made tot he campus.

Slide Show

The first slide show I found was one of girls soccer on the Caledonia Record Website. The thing is it had nice pictures but not much else there was no audio and no story attached it was just a slide show of pictures. However it seemed as they cared more about selling the pictures than the actual story behind them. However I did find they'd take one or two pictures and use them in stories on other parts of the website. As well they had quite a substantial record of photos slide shows so you can see and look through old photos right on the website.

The second one that had audio was The Miami Herald in Haiti. Its a pretty powerful piece some of the images associated are strong pictures of death and destruction cause to haiti. The underlying audio as well gives it a stronger emotional pull as well. The person reading the story does a very low and serious voice that contributes greatly to the piece because it provides powerful imagery with a good audio story to really make a good slide show news presentation.

Dog Bite Rewrite

A dog owner received a ticket on thursday after their dog bit a 6 year old child on the neck.

The incident took place around 7:30 at an apartment on Victor ave. The child was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

This is not the first child to be bitten by the same dog either after the first incident the dog was quarantined for 10 days and the owner was sited for a leash law violation according to MPD spokesman Darnell Wright.

CBS Atlanta

My first impression of the CBS atlanta web site is that its very crowded with information on the home page there just seems to be stuff everywhere with no real order to the page. On second look you see its divide up into sub sections with small writing for each story just a title with a link it isn't very eye catching. Over all the website is effective in giving the necessary information.  Just they way they present the news it seems to be a lot to take in with all the stories right on the front page. Which is one thing that I do like about the website though is they give you a full range of news to pick from just it seems to be a little to crowded. Overall the website is effective at what its trying to do and that is conveying the news.

Ski blog critique

I found a blog on skiing called ski-blog. Its all about skiing and they post reviews of different mountains and what they think of them after they ski them. Overall its a pretty good blog with a lot of useful information available. The looks of the blog are a little bland just white page not really much going on in the margins or anything. However the information is better than the looks so overall I think it is a pretty good blog.
